What is bagasse, exactly? By Ambica Enterprises
Bagasse (ba-gas) is a type of plant fiber. It is, more particularly, the fibrous matter byproduct of sugarcane production. Because it had no practical value, this biowaste product was often discarded, thrown away, or burned.
Bagasse vs. Conventional Resources
Bagasse is currently commonly utilized in the catering business to replace disposables consisting of wood, pulp, fiber, petrochemicals, and plastics. Bagasse takeaway containers, bagasse plates, and bagasse bowls are prevalent in the industry.
An Alternative to Paper
Many people believe that because paper goods compost and biodegrade and are categorized as a renewable resource, they are environmentally friendly.
However, its manufacture necessitates the felling of a vast number of trees.
Plastic coatings, for example, are frequently applied to take-out containers to guarantee that they are waterproof and greaseproof. This makes the finished product far more difficult to recycle (since the ingredients must be separated) and prevents it from entirely biodegrading.
A Non-Plastic Alternative
Plastics are made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource whose extraction has numerous environmental consequences. The most serious concern, however, is that plastic does not decompose naturally over time, so any plastic product that is not recycled or disposed of properly can accumulate and harm our ecosystem.
This year alone, the UK discarded 10.8 billion wet wipes, 16.5 billion plastic cutlery pieces, 42 billion plastic straws, and 4.1 billion single-use drink cups and lids (statistics by the WWF). According to Greenpeace, around 12.7 million tonnes of plastic items wind up in our seas each year, wreaking havoc on the marine life that inhabits them.
Bagasse, on the other hand, is a natural resource that is 100 percent biodegradable, which means that if it enters our environment, it will spontaneously decompose into the soil without any human intervention or additional processing.
Bagasse's Environmentally Friendly Properties
- Produced as a byproduct of sugarcane cultivation
- Sustainably sourced with little or no environmental impact.
- 100% compostable and will decompose to compost if left in the natural environment.
- It does not require any additional additions or chemicals to be whitened or strengthened.
- Crop replenishment is quick, with sugarcane collected in a single season.
- Food Packaging Properties
- Bagasse has several natural properties that make it suitable for use in food packaging and takeaway food containers.
- Grease and water resistance without the need for additional chemicals.
- High-temperature resistance, readily withstands up to 95 degrees, microwave and freezer safe. Fibrous texture provides significantly more protection than paper or styrofoam packing.
- It is very insulating, allowing it to keep food warmer for longer than typical plastic and paper food packaging.
- It does not deteriorate prematurely, only beginning to compost a few weeks after being exposed to natural factors.
Ambica Enterprises Eco-Friendly food packing products are made completely from 100% Sugarcane Bagasse without any plastic or wax coating.
